It was with great shock and sadness that all of us at Aston Business School learned of the unexpected passing away of our colleague Nelson Tang at just 41 years of age.To many of us Nelson was also a friend who, in the time he was with us, earned our respect and trust for his professionalism, reliability, enthusiasm and the valuable contribution he made in areas related to Management of Technology and Operations Management. The many messages I have received from his colleagues and acquaintances around the world are an indication of how well regarded he was among the international academic community. He will be greatly missed by us all.
Nelson was from Hong Kong.He studied for his first degree in Industrial Management Science in Taiwan before returning to Hong Kong to teach and work in manufacturing. In 1986 he came to the UK and took an MSc at Strathclyde University and a PhD at the University of Huddersfield. He then worked as a Research Fellow at Keele University and a Lecturer at Leicester University before joining Aston as a Senior Lecturer in 2000.
It is only possible to mention here a few of Nelson's contributions and activities.Externally he was involved in the organization of all the international conferences on Managing Innovative Manufacturing since the inaugural event at Keele in 1993.He also undertook a number of editorial responsibilities including being co-editor of the International Journal of Business Performance Management.Within Aston his main academic contribution was to the development and administration of our programmes in e-business as well as to our Technology Management and Operations Management teaching and research. Most recently he was heading our Technology and Operations Management research group.
Nelson will, more than anything, be remembered at Aston for his cheerful attitude and his ability to bring out the best in others when working together as a team. Not only is his passing a great loss to his colleagues he will also be remembered with fondness by his family. He leaves a wife and two sons.
