Travis Tanaka, an associate marine biologist with Fish and Game's Finfish Management Project in Monterey, said the department just began collecting data for a stock assessment last year.

In the meantime, Tanaka has received several e-mails from anglers concerned that too many halibut are being caught.

"The fact is we don't have a whole lot of data (on halibut)," Tanaka said.

The majority of halibut fishing in the Bay is recreational, said Travis Tanaka, an associate marine biologist for the state Department of Fish & Game.

Tanaka said data are not available to compare this year's halibut season with others, but there has been talk there will be more of the fish meeting the 22-inch
    ...
Tanaka said a halibut-stock assessment, which would estimate the amount of the fish out there, is planned. That would lead to a fishery management plan that would include fishing guidelines. He said the timing of the assessment has nothing to do with this year's catch, the halibut was just next in line for assessment.

He said the halibut population has historically been considered healthy.

Throwing dead fish off a boat would be violation of state law, according to associated marine biologist Travis Tanaka.

Tanaka said it is often hard in such cases to find a direct link between a particular fishing boat and the dead fish.

The last time dead fish rolled up onto shore locally was about five months ago in Marina, Tanaka said.
