In tests in Paraguay, for example, if caught at 2% infestation, a 12-bu. increase in yields was seen versus untreated plots, reports Allison Tally, Syngenta's technical brand manager for fungicides. At 30% disease levels, only a 3-bu. increase was seen.

Getting out in fields with a 20X magnifying lens and studying the underside of lower canopy leaves for tiny pustules is the best method to detect rust, according to Tally.

Allison Tally, brand manager for Syngenta, believes growers are right to be concerned. “Unfortunately, there's nothing growers can do to discourage or prevent rust from appearing in their fields,†Tally said. “Rust comes in on the wind, so it's not carried over by trash from the previous season. All the soybean varieties that have been tested to date are susceptible to rust, so there's no resistance that we're aware of.â€

However, that doesn't mean growers are helpless.Tally believes the most valuable tool in a grower's arsenal is education. She encourages growers to stay abreast of local rust outbreaks as well as weather predictions to assess their fields' risk.

Tally said Syngenta has increased production in anticipation of increased need.

Based on research and farmer experience in Brazil and elsewhere in the world, the economics of spraying hinge on early treatment, said Allison Tally, technical brand manager for Syngenta. In South American research, a single application with a low level of disease, less than 2 percent, brought a 12 bushel per acre yield increase. With 30% infestation, the yield boost fell to only three bushels.

For the past two years, Syngenta has been testing fungicides in Brazil that are available for U.S. growers, Tally said.

Including application charges, that amount can be as high as $20 per acre, Tally said.
