    r. Priscilla Dienes Taft, 85, who fulfilled her ambition to become a doctor despite tuberculosis, a terrible car accident, and rejection from Harvard Medical School because of her gender, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

    A Hungarian immigrant who graduated from Radcliffe College, Dr. Taft was inspired by her father to earn a medical degree at Yale Medical School.After additional training, she became a pathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital, and she delivered lectures on cytology at the school that didn't admit its first woman until a year after she became a physician.

    The daughter of Marian Jakubek Dienes and Louis Dienes, a bacteriologist, Dr. Taft was born in Budapest.

    While at medical school she contracted tuberculosis, "an occupational hazard for doctors that might have meant the end of her medical career," her brother-in-law John Taft of Brewster said yesterday.

    Priscilla D. Taft '38, a doctor who lectured at Harvard Medical School despite being turned down for admission into its program as a Radcliffe undergraduate because of her gender, died Nov. 23 at Berkshire Medical Center.She was 85.

    Taft overcame obstacles such as a bout with tuberculosis and a car accident to become head of the cytology laboratory of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a Harvard teaching hospital.
