r. Priscilla Dienes Taft, 85, who fulfilled her ambition to become a doctor despite tuberculosis, a terrible car accident, and rejection from Harvard Medical School because of her gender, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
A Hungarian immigrant who graduated from Radcliffe College, Dr. Taft was inspired by her father to earn a medical degree at Yale Medical School.After additional training, she became a pathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital, and she delivered lectures on cytology at the school that didn't admit its first woman until a year after she became a physician.
The daughter of Marian Jakubek Dienes and Louis Dienes, a bacteriologist, Dr. Taft was born in Budapest.

Dr. Taft graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1944, five years before the first women - a group of 12 - graduated from Harvard Medical School.
While at medical school she contracted tuberculosis, "an occupational hazard for doctors that might have meant the end of her medical career," her brother-in-law John Taft of Brewster said yesterday.
