Kevin A. Swersey is a renowned wine authority whose understanding of how markets move and who moves them is unparalleled in the industry.Kevin graduated with honors in Economics from the State University of New York, College at Purchase in 1984.He is also a graduate of Harriet Lembeck's Wine Program at the Waldorf-Astoria (undergraduate and graduate programs), as well as the German Wine Academy.Mr. Swersey is a member of The Wine Society (United Kingdom), Zinfandel Advocates and Producers, and was the first member of the Appraisers Association of America ever to have been accepted in the field of wine.
Mr. Swersey has been in the wine business since 1985 when he joined Zachys, America's premier retailer of fine wines.His initial position was sales associate, but he quickly rose through the ranks and in 1986 was promoted to assistant manager.Some of Mr. Swersey's responsibilities included evaluating and purchasing wine and overseeing special client services.He has traveled through most of the world's great wine regions including: Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, Germany, Switzerland, and Chile.
In 1994, Mr. Swersey focused some of his energies toward establishing and implementing a new joint venture between Zachys and Christie's; their first wine auction set a U.S. record of $1.825 million in April 1995.As Auction Director, Mr. Swersey's keen involvement and leadership helped propel this partnership to many new world records.At the April 1996 auction, an original wooden case of 1945 Château Mouton-Rothschild sold for $112,500, marking the first time that a case of wine was sold for more than $100,000.The October 1996 wine sale achieved nearly four million dollars, shattering the previous world record by more than one million dollars.In March 1997, the sale of the Tawfig N. Khoury Collection set a world record for a single owner sale; an unprecedented 100% of the lots offered were sold for a total of almost $3.2 million.This success helped catapult sales totals for 1997 to nearly $20 million.Under Mr. Swersey's guidance from April of 1995 through his departure in June of 2000, Zachys/Christie's sold more than 45,000 lots and recognized sales totals in excess of $86 million.
In July 2000, Kevin A. Swersey announced the formation of a new partnership with J. Patrick Cooney.
