    SALEM - Fred S. Sweitzer Jr., 83, of Salem died at 9 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center following injuries in an automobile accident on April 6 in Salem.He was born on January 4, 1921, in Miles City, Montana, to the late Fred S. and Freda (Sanders) Sweitzer Sr.He has lived most of his life in the Salem area and was a 34-year employee of the Deming Pump Company when he retired in 1978 from the Shipping Department.A 1939 graduate of Greenford High School where he was an outstanding athlete by receiving 12 varsity letters in four sports in four years, he attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.Active in the Salem Hot Stove League in baseball, he played semi-professional baseball and went to spring training camp with the Washington Senators in 1940 and 1941.He was a member of the Salem First United Methodist Church and organized the church league in basketball and participated in it for many years.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Margaret M. Trewetz, whom he married on September 29, 1943.
