Barbara Sweitzer, the YMCA's chief executive officer, told some 275 community members at the dinner that health issues including diabetes and childhood obesity have driven American life expectancy rates down.

However, with such a strong community backing the Olean YMCA, which boasts 7,000 members, including the seven honorees and four volunteers recognized Thursday, people in the Southern Tier can and do seek the help they need to attain good health, Ms. Sweitzer said.

She said President George Bush recently tapped the national YMCA to spearhead Activate America, a program that will target childhood obesity, diabetes and other serious health issues in the nation.

"The time is now.We will activate America by activating our greater Olean area," Ms. Sweitzer said."We will help the help seeker, for those who want to be healthier but don't know how to do it."

She said Mission: Meltdown, the YMCA's first large-scale holistic fitness program that drew over 900 participants, is winding down with a collective 5,000 pounds lost.

"That's two and a half tons of fat," she said.

On March 20, the Olean YMCA will kick off its Frequent Flyer program, which will "reward people for choosing a healthy lifestyle," she said.

"He reminds us what the YMCA can mean to the life of a child," said Ms. Sweitzer.

Barbara Sweitzer, chief executive officer of the Olean YMCA, said the facility's business offices were moved across the street to the YMCA daycare center building to make room for the new exercise area.Ms. Sweitzer said work on the renovation has already begun. She said the YMCA held a quiet capital campaign to raise the remaining $90,000 needed for the renovation.

Sen. Young said the goal is to help people live happier, healthier lives.

"There is a big group of people out there in Cattaraugus County who want to live healthier lives and it is up to us to find a way to help them," she said
    ...
Mrs. Sweitzer said the YMCA will forge partnerships with private corporations, schools and public service organizations in the region to guide people to healthier lifestyles. She said this year's successful Mission Meltdown campaign convinced her that many in the community want to live healthier lives through exercise.

Mission Meltdown was a 10-week program launched in January to help people meet their personal fitness goals and keep their New Year's resolutions.Between Jan. 9 and Feb. 20, Mission Meltdown's 907 participants lost a total 4,016.85 pounds.

"Of that 900, 84 percent finished the program, which was huge," Mrs. Sweitzer said.

About 35 percent of the people who signed up for Mission Meltdown became YMCA members after the program was over. The YMCA found that Mission Meltdown participants enjoyed working with personal trainers who pushed them to achieve fitness goals.

Mrs. Sweitzer said the YMCA realized that New Year's resolutions provided the push many needed to start living healthier lives.

"We realized that it gave us a teachable moment where we could help people reach their fitness goals," she said.

Many people want to live healthier lives. They just don't know how to start and lack the discipline to keep exercising once they begin.Mrs. Sweitzer said the YMCA hopes to help them.

She said a task force will be formed from representatives of the 20 area organizations represented at the meeting Thursday.Together, they'll develop proposals to bring Activate Cattaraugus to the surrounding community.

Mrs. Sweitzer said Activate Cattaraugus will involve the entire community from area schools to its largest corporations and industries.
