Sweeting says he welcomes Truckers with open arms

    ...
Although the defending-champion TBS Truckers won't be playing baseball anytime soon, New Providence Amateur Baseball League president Theodore "Teddy" Sweeting said Wednesday that the league will still move on.

Sweeting said the league will celebrate its 10th year of providing baseball in New Providence when it begins its 2003 season on Saturday, March 29, 2003.

During the official opening ceremonies, 26 people are expected to be honoured for their contributions to baseball and there will be an opening game between last year's runners-up, the Dudley Panthers, and the Del Sol Sharks.

"It is an extreme joy and excitement to have seen the league grown to this point and we are able to appreciate many individuals who have been a part of this league. For me personally, it's a joy to see that we are continuing the process and growth of baseball and that's what it is all about," he said.

Individuals to be honoured at the opening ceremony are: Jeff Williams, Andy Ford, Jeff Francis, Keith Ford, Craig Kemp, Theodore Sweeting, Jeannie Scavella, Dillon Bethel, Loretta Maycock, Greg Burrows, Tommy Stubbs, Danny Stubbs, Frankie Sweeting Sr., Stephen Beneby, Ed Armbrister, Lionel Ferguson, Wayde Wallace, Gordon Rodland, Dion Forsythe, Vince Rolle, Nat Butler, Billy Stevenson, Kevin Culmer, Bertie Murray Jr., Terran Rodgers and Vady Turnquest.

Teddy Sweeting, NPABL president, announced the change at a press conference yesterday.

"Nassau is our city and we wanted (baseball) to be directed to New Providence," he said.

The League will officially open on April 7 at the Andre Rodgers National Baseball stadium where the Subway Stars will play the Solomons, and the defending champions Buttons Formal Wear will take on last year's runners-up the Silversun Sharks at 4 p.m., following the opening ceremony.

About 18 teams will compete for the 2002 title including newcomers the Dorkie Park Boys and the Forth Brothers.

"They have a lot of young guys. They are being led by Mario Ford, who has conducted several clinics over the years.

That's where the shortage is and that's what we like," said Sweeting. "He's sure to have a competitive team this year."

Although the champion and runners-up pendants were on display at the press conference, Sweeting said the awards will not be presented until April 5 at an awards ceremony. Individual awards including Best Pitcher and Most Stolen Bases will also be presented.

"This event will be free to all our League players. This is for camaraderie, to bring us all together to celebrate our success from last year and hopes of what we expect throughout the year," Sweeting said.

The NPABL will also host an All-star weekend, which should feature capital-based, Grand Bahama, as well as teams from Bimini and Inagua.

"We are going to do something that we've been asked on many occasions to include inner-island play, but what we're going to do is invite all the Family Islands to have a All-star team represent them in the weekend tournament," said Sweeting, adding that islands will also see an Under-15 All-star tournament.

He added that there will be several fundraisers to assist a national team to travel to the MSBL tournament in Arizona.

NPABL President Theodore "Teddy" Sweeting said Monday that suspensions will definitely be levied. He said that the severity of the suspensions will depend on a meeting of NPABL executives later this week.

NPABL Vice President Dillion Bethel confirmed Monday that league heads will soon hold a meeting to decide the pitchers' fate. He added that suspensions can be given out to the two pitchers or the team as a whole.

"I think there is going to be some actions taken, but I am not the final authority," said Bethel. "In the past, behaviour like that would have definitely warranted a suspension."
