Dr. William Sweet to Deliver 2008 Aquinas Lecture on "Dignity and Individual Freedom"
...
Dr. William Sweet, Vice-President (Academic) at St. Thomas University and Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Department of Religious Studies, will explore this concept during the 2008 Aquinas Lecture, "Dignity and Human Freedom".
...
"Is dignity an obsolete concept, simply rooted in religious texts," asks Dr. Sweet."Does it have any relevance today? In this talk I present the view that dignity is a fundamental and objective value that underlies our moral relations to other people, and that it is essential to moral, political and legal decision making.Dignity is something that all human beings possess, and cannot be legitimately overridden. But it also requires us to be responsible in the exercise of our freedoms, and places limits on it."
Dr. Sweet is President of the Canadian Philosophical Association, a member of the Steering Committee of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies, and Secretary General of the World Union of Catholic Philosophical Societies. He has lectured on six continents and his research interests include applied issues in human rights, the relation of religion, science, and politics, comparative Asian and Western philosophy, cross-cultural ethics, and late 19th and early 20th century British and Western European thought.
He is the author and/or editor of some 30 books, including Idealism and Rights, Philosophical Theory and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Philosophy, Pluralism, and Culture, and Responses to the Enlightenment: An Exchange on Foundations, Faith, and Community.
