Sweeney is hopeful that he'll be able to do something that Bonds won't this season - be a playoff participant.
...
The Giants are languishing in last place in the NL West, but every game for Sweeney now has playoff implications. In the first trade between the heated rivals since 1985, Sweeney was moved from San Francisco to the Los Angeles Dodgers 11 days ago for a player to be named later or cash.
"I was in a situation where I wasn't going to get that much playing time with the Giants," Sweeney admitted."They are going to be evaluating players during the remainder of the season. It's exciting to be joining a team that has the opportunity to be in the playoffs. We have some ground to make up, but we still have enough time to do that."
The Dodgers have been floundering, particularly on offense, during the last three weeks. They've fallen 6 1/2 games back in the NL West but were still only 2 1/2 games behind the wild-card leaders entering yesterday's action.Los Angeles acquired the 37-year-old Sweeney in an effort to generate more runs.
During the second half of the season, Sweeney has been among the most productive role players in the major leagues. He's batting a torrid .444 since the All-Star break, which has improved his batting average to .263.Sweeney was batting .208 at the break and was only hitting .172 when the Giants visited Fenway Park in June. He's hit a pair of home runs and driven in 12 runs.
"Things have been going well for me," said Sweeney."Earlier in the season I was having some good at-bats, but the hits just weren't falling. That's why I was optimistic that I could turn things around."
Sweeney leads the major leagues in pinch hits with 18, and he's added two to his total since joining the Dodgers.Sweeney is second on the all-time pinch hit list with 157.Earlier this season, he passed current Los Angeles coach Manny Mota for second place on the all-time pinch hit list.Mota gave Sweeney an autographed jersey for his accomplishment.

I really appreciated Manny doing it, and now he's one of my coaches," said Sweeney.

When Sweeney joined the Dodgers he became a member of a team that has strong New England ties.Dodgers owner Frank McCourt hails from Boston.

"We have a great group of guys," said Sweeney.
