    ksweeney@thesummitprep.org

We are pleased to welcome Karen Sweeney as our new Head of School. Sweeney joins The Summit having served over 30 years as Vice President and Dean of Students at Drury University. She brings a considerable amount of administrative experience in the field of education to The Summit which is entering its third year of operation for grades K - 8.

Karen Sweeney, a native Kansan, attended the University of Kansas for her undergraduate and graduate work in education. Studying for her graduate degree at KU provided her with the opportunity to serve them as Assistant Dean of Women and as Director of Nunemaker College. She first made her mark on Springfield as the first fulltime counselor at the Springfield Catholic High School. The next year, in 1973, she joined the Drury University staff and served for 33 years as Dean of Women, Dean of Students, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Executive Vice President. She retired in 2006 and began a new career at the Summit on June 1, 2007. She brings experience with education from Kindergarten through the university level both as a classroom teacher and as an administrator.

Karen has been active in the Springfield community, serving as board president of the Rape Crisis Center (now the Victim Center), Leadership Springfield, and the Junior League of Springfield. She is married to Circuit Court Judge J. Miles Sweeney. Miles and Karen are proud of their only daughter, Elizabeth, their son-in-law and their two grandchildren who plan to begin studying at The Summit in 2010 and 2012.

Karen Sweeney, former executive vice president at Drury University, has been named the head of school at the Summit preparatory school.

Sweeney, who retired from Drury last year after 33 years there, will oversee operations at the local independent prep school that offered educational opportunities for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

"I think it's just as important to learn to enjoy life as it is to succeed at it and with such great people leading the way, the Summit gives students the resources and opportunity to do both," Sweeney said.

The school is located at 922 W. Republic Road.
