    Mr. Surato was born in Woodbridge on March 28, 1930, son of the late Edward and Fedora Porier Surato. He was educated in New Haven Public Schools where he attended Davis St. School, Sheridan Jr. High and Hillhouse High School, Class of 1948. He graduated from Ohio School of Trades in Columbus and Merchant Marine Academy, St. Petersburg, FL. He served in the Merchant Marine, the Navy Reserve and Coast Guard Auxiliary. After World War II, he served as a sergeant in the US Air Force, stationed with the Army of Occupation in Landstule, Germany. He worked as a gun assembler for Winchester Repeating Arms. A member of Operating Engineers Local 478, he worked for Anthony Julian and C.W. Blakeslee construction companies. He was maintenance supervisor for International Instruments and West Haven Shipyard and was the superintendent at the Doctor's Building, 2 Church St. South for 18 years prior to retirement. He was a member of D.A.V., V.F.W. and was a Life Member of City Point Yacht Club.
