Dr. Plodprasob Suraswadi, Chairman of the Sub-Committee for the Tsunami Memorial Project, stated, On behalf of the Thai Government, we would like to invite architects, designers, artists and laypersons from around the world, to enter this competition, which commemorates those who lost their lives, not only Thais, but all citizens.

Presiding over a news conference to announce the result of the registration of contestants to the competition, Dr. Plodprasob Suraswadi, Vice Minister for Natural Resources and Environment and Chairman of the Sub-Committee for Tsunami Memorial Project, said : "At the closure of the registration process on 15 November, the organizing committee has received 679 registrants from 49 countries, including Thailand.

Plodprasob Suraswadi, the assistant to the minister of natural resources and environment, is in charge of the project due to open officially on New Year's Day.

Plodprasob Suraswadi, Vice Minister for Natural Resources and Environment and Chairman of the Sub-Committee for Tsunami Memorial Project, said that the memorial will be built at Khao Lak-Lamru National Park in Phangnga Province, which was most seriously hit by tsunami in Thailand last year.

"At the closure of the registration process on Nov. 15, the organizing committee has received 679 registrants from 49 countries," Plodprasob said during a news conference here on Friday.

Speaking after a meeting of a committee in charge of solving the problem of elephants roaming the streets of Bangkok, Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment, Mr. Plodprasob Suraswadi, admitted that previous plans to get elephants out of the city had proved unsuccessful.

At present around 200-250 elephants remained in the capital, he said, while hinting that a large proportion of these beasts might be 'political elephants' which people were trying to use as bargaining chips in disputes with the government.

Most notably, he said, elephants smuggled in from forests in Myanmar and Cambodia were using counterfeit registration documents.
