Although Oracle may claim that Oracle8i is the first Internet database, Mike Sun, an analyst with the Giga Information Group, pointed out that other companies have offered Internet support through databases for some time.IBM's latest release of DB2 Universal Database has a Java Virtual Machine built in.What Oracle has done, Sun said, is push the envelope in terms of enabling the database as a universal file mediator, enabling any browser to access corporate knowledge without additional plug-ins.
