    Mei Sun, M.D., Ph.D.Staff Scientist

Dr. Mei Sun is a Staff Scientist at the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) in Rockville, Maryland.A recent addition to the CPDR staff (July 2001), she brings a wealth of considerable experience in the fields of molecular oncology and molecular genetics. Her state-of-the art expertise in cloning of human disease associated genes using positional and functional cloning approaches is of particular relevance in her current area of research at CPDR.

Dr. Sun received her M.D. in 1988 from West China University of Medical Sciences where she specialized in Obstetrics/Gynecology.She then pursued her Ph.D. at the Shanghai Medical University, which was awarded to her in 1996.Dr. Sun received her postdoctoral training from 1996 to 1997 in the area of molecular oncology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. From 1997 to 2001, she received further postdoctoral training in the area of molecular genetics at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, (NINDS), NIH.

While at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, Dr. Sun independently identified Mucolipidosis Type IV disease gene by positional cloning in an unprecedented short period of seven months and was responsible for screening and cloning differentially-expressed genes in subtractive libraries from fibroblasts of this same disease.

Other notable research accomplishments by Dr. Sun include the screening and cloning of differentially-expressed genes in human uterine leiomyoma tissue by differentially-displayed RT-PCR assays as well as analysis of mRNA and protein expression of progesterone and estrogen receptors in human uterine leiomyoma tissue.

Dr. Sun has published 10 peer reviewed original reports including articles in Human Molecular Genetics and Genomics. She is the recipient of the National Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, which was awarded to her in 1996 by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Post Doctoral Fellowship at NIH.Some of Dr. Sun's past grants include the study of molecular genetics and differentially-expressed genes of human uterine leomyoma.

Dr. Sun is currently spearheading a major research project in the CPDR laboratory focusing on the characterization of a tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 6q.
