A joint release from Lee Martinelli Jr. of Martinelli Vineyards, Nick Leras of Leras Vineyard, Mark Sanchietti of Sanchietti Farming LLC and Mike Sullivan of Benovia Winery, mentions that adequate rains have let grapegrowers minimize irrigation--if they irrigate at all.

    Mike Sullivan

Mike Sullivan has lived in Sonoma County all of his life.He attended Fresno State, earning a degree in fermentation science. He has worked for several wineries in his 18 years in the wine business, most recently, Hartford Court. At Hartford, he won many awards including being named "Wine Personality of the Year" by Robert Parker and "Winemaker of the Year" by Ronn Wiegand of the magazine Restaurant Wine.Mike won the sweepstakes award for both his Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair.He is the only winemaker ever to win the sweepstakes award for both a red and white wine.Robert Parker has said of Mike, "I'm a big fan of winemaker Mike Sullivan as he seems to have the brilliant ability to convert Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel into wines of considerable character and individuality."
    ...
Mike focuses on three important aspects of winemaking.First, he is very attentive to the terrior of each vineyard. He walks the vineyards on a weekly basis to understand all aspects of each vineyard's life cycle. He uses this knowledge to intensively farm each vineyard and produce the highest quality grape possible.Once these grapes are harvested he exercises extraordinary care in the winemaking process to allow the grapes to transform into the finest possible expression of wine.

Mike is married with two boys, a weimaraner and several cats. When not in the cellar, the vineyards or at home, Mike can be found on one of Sonoma County's many beautiful golf courses.

Mike Sullivan, winemaker at Hartford Family Winery, presented our final seminar. We tasted and compared four single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. All were delicious but one stood out among the rest, the Arrendell Vineyard Pinot Noir. This Pinot Noir is made from a small vineyard in the Green Valley AVA in the Russian River Region of Sonoma County. Mike explained the nuances of growing and making wine from this finicky grape.

We are thrilled to have as our guest speaker winemaker Mike Sullivan of Hartford Court. The wines Mike has been creating have garnered tremendous reviews. For example this is what Robert Parker wrote:

" ... Hartford Court with brilliant winemaker Mike Sullivan at the helm, is doing everything right. These are always some of the most exciting and diverse offerings in my tastings, and I always walk away shaking my head at just how good they are."

Mike has chosen five elegant selections and Chef Mark is excited about creating food to accompany them.

While both vineyards produced high quality wines, their winemaker Mike Sullivan told me that they felt that the higher density vines produced more of what they were looking for. Mike stressed that uniformity in the vineyard was the primary factor for the production of high-end wines. The smaller vines tended to produce fruit that matured more evenly within each vine and across the vineyard. Mike believes that the vineyard must be developed and maintained at every step with uniformity in mind. To that end, they are engaging in new plantings of high density vines, taking the same painstaking measures as had been done at the Platt Vineyard.

Perhaps most vineyards will not be farmed using the Integrated Winegrowing approach.
