"Calling this simply an exhibition does not do justice to the extraordinary experiences that await visitors to this unique and innovative presentation" says Exploreum Executive Director Michael Sullivan.

Mummy: the inside story showcases more than 90 Egyptian funerary objects, including the coffin and mummy of Nesperannub, an Egyptian priest who lived 3,000 years ago.The artifacts are from The British Museum's outstanding Egyptology collection.Through information panels, the exhibit also tells the story of the life and death of ancient Egyptians and explores the practice of mummification.

"What sets Mummy apart from traditional museum shows, however, is a spectacular 3-D ‘virtual tour' inside the mummy that is an integral element of the exhibition" adds Sullivan.Exhibit visitors, wearing special glasses, will enter a 100-seat immersive theater specially-constructed within the exhibit hall, to witness in 3-D clarity the virtual unwrapping of Nesperannub's mummy and a historical reconstruction of how he lived.

"As a Science Center, we are excited about the opportunity to show visitors how modern medical technologies, such as CT scans, and forensic science help today's archeologists and historians uncover the mysteries of ancient Egypt" Sullivan says.

"The goal of our international exhibit series is to provide area citizens with the very best educational and entertainment experiences and to attract visitors from throughout the southeast to Mobile to enjoy the city and all that it has to offer" explains Sullivan.

"Exhibits of the rarity, emotional content, quality and name-recognition of Pompeii are hard to find," said Michael Sullivan, Exploreum Executive Director.
    ...
"Most poignant and compelling, however, are the body casts of the volcano's victims included in the exhibition," noted Sullivan. The casts provide surprisingly detailed images of Pompeii's citizens, frozen in their last moments - a man holding a cloth to his mouth; a couple embracing as they fell, a slave with an ankle manacle still in place. The haunting figures were first made in the 1860s by pouring plaster into the cavities left in the thick volcanic materials after the bodies of the trapped victims decayed.

Few other exhibits offer visitors such an emotional and personal connection with individuals who lived 2000 years ago."How particularly meaningful for Gulf Coast residents, post Katrina, to share the experiences of residents of another seaside community that was also terribly impacted by Mother Nature," added Sullivan.

The Exploreum has scheduled complementary IMAX® and Virtual Journeys programs in its two specialty theaters to show concurrently with the Pompeii exhibition."As always, we will use the Exploreum's leading-edge imaging technologies to ‘bump up' the visitor's experience to eye-popping, ‘you-are-there' levels," Sullivan said.
    ...
"With the Exploreum's experience and reputation with blockbuster shows, the timing and length of our dates and the complementary ‘you-are-there' IMAX and 3D experiences, we expect up to 150,000 visitors will see Pompeii in Mobile," added Sullivan.
