Facilities with 100 students or more can get school-zone designation; those with fewer than 100 children can get flashing caution lights, a "School Traffic Turning" sign or both, said MDOT area traffic engineer Mike Sullivan at a meeting here in August.

School-zone status lowers the speed limit by 10 mph outside a facility.A turning sign does essentially the same thing but is not enforceable.Daycares also can get flashing caution lights but must buy them, Sullivan said.

"There are only two places where we use a period on signs," said Mike Sullivan, a MDOT area engineer.

Sullivan said the state follows the national manual on uniform traffic signs, which calls for periods to be used only with cardinal directions on street signs and to abbreviate miles per hour as m.p.h.

"If (the memorial signs) seem to be confusing, then we will entertain changes in the future," Sullivan said.
