Moreover , Mike Sullivan , who is the national representative for the Communications , Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada , says the CBC's use of outside technicians , rather than staffers , could result in problems with unionized employees at NBC , the U.S. Olympic network.
But the big losers , Sullivan said , will be Canadian viewers and also sponsors who bought into the CBC's Olympic coverage expecting the network's best telecast.
It's not going to be the normal CBC standard , Sullivan said.In fact , the French producers [ French-language CBC ] have asked the CBC to reconsider their decision because the quality will suffer..
Two of the responsibilities of the technicians are camera switching and maintenance of the mobile broadcast units.Sullivan said the freelancers are not sufficiently knowledgeable of CBC equipment to adequately do the job.Only our people know those trucks , he said.
As for curling , for which the CBC is the host broadcaster , Sullivan said he isn't sure NBC's unionized staff would accept a feed produced partly by staff who would be considered by some people to be outside workers.
But a CBC representative said it's too late to replace the freelancers.Because of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 , Games organizers wanted the names of the broadcast crew members submitted last week.Since the network has been unable to reach a contract agreement with its technicians , it had no choice but to retain freelancers.
