The organization uses this method because killing the cats would simply encourage other feral cats to take over their territory and continue breeding, said Denise Stravia, acting president and CEO of AzCATs.
By spaying or neutering the cats and returning them to their environment, they will maintain their territory until they die off naturally.
Stravia said two things contribute to the high feral cat population in the Valley.First, people often don't get their pets spayed or neutered.Second, the weather works in the cats' favor.
"Other parts of the country have feral cats, but the winter kills many of them off," Stravia said.
The organization hopes to solve the problem by working with whole neighborhoods, not just individual homeowners.
"Working yard by yard is not getting it done because if I have feral cats in my yard and I get them neutered, another neighbor probably still has them," Stravia said.
