Former state legislator Samuel Reddy Jr. died Sunday at Concord Hospital.
Reddy, 73, had served five terms in the New Hampshire Legislature, from 1964 to 1974, representing Hopkinton as a Republican. Most of that time he was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Reddy was a staunch opponent of broad-based taxes. Preventing the introduction of a sales or income tax in New Hampshire was his No. 1 cause as a legislator, according to his family.
For the past 22 years, Reddy worked for the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of New Hampshire, a trade organization representing 57,000 people.
His most recent position there was executive vice president. In his role he weighed in on such matters as then-Gov.

Reddy was a New Hampshire native; he grew up in Loudon and Rye and graduated from the Hampton School. He worked in advertising before joining the Navy.
In addition to his work in politics, Reddy was an active businessman. He owned and operated three motels in the Lakes Region. He also owned a real estate business and was part owner of a home-building business. -
