Just adjacent to the Activities and Recreation Center is a sight to behold: the new 45,000-square-foot Segundo Commons dining facility, which is scheduled to open by July, according to UCD Campus Architect Robert Strand.

Strand said the old dining facility, which was constructed 40 years ago, is unable to accommodate the growing student population and offers an outdated method for students to acquire food.Due to these factors, the old facility will be torn down within the next year.
“The old cafeteria idea [of getting food] has not been enjoyed by students in recent years,†Strand said.
Inside the new facility, new food “islands†will offer students a variety of choices, including pizza sites, hamburger grills, a salad and bread bar and a Euro kitchen.
Strand said the facility's kitchen is already operable and will serve as the central kitchen for other satellite dining commons across the campus.
