Based on statements from witnesses and evidence collected at the scene, Kellems said Stone had just driven through an automatic car wash. Police said it appears Stone was standing at the trunk of his car possibly wiping the vehicle down when his gun somehow fell from his holster and discharged when it struck the pavement, said Kellems.

Stone has been a correctional officer at Indiana State Prison since November 2002, said Indiana Department of Correction spokeswoman Pam Pattison.
