  High River actor George Stone will perform in the one-man play Underneath the Lintel in Okotoks later this month.

  George Stone will take the stage over the weekends of Aug. 16 and 23 to perform the solo show, leading the audience on a trip around the world in 80 minutes and challenging their beliefs.A member of the Windmill Theatre Players, Stone's experience as a thespian started with high school plays, which led to university productions that solidified his love for the art and enabled him to incorporate theatre into his elementary school classes, which he taught for 25 years.In this upcoming production Stone will play a librarian who notices a book just returned had been overdue for 113 years.That nugget of intrigue leads the librarian to uncover a trail of reasons to believe the truant is the legendary Wandering Jew, cursed to immortality until the second coming of Jesus Christ."I've done the play before and people said they couldn't get it out of their heads," said Stone, who has been involved in theatre for 45 years."It challenges the things people hold to be true and why. "It's a very thought-provoking play."The ideas unfold at times comedically, "there are a lot of laughs in the play," he said, and at times tenderly, for example, as he recounts his regret that he didn't ask the only girl he ever loved to marry him.Watching the play will be a visually-simple experience, with only a few objects on the sparse stage to create the ideologically-complex experience.A key structure in the production will be a lintel, a horizontal support beam at the top of a doorframe, so integral to the story that the play is called Underneath the Lintel.Life-changing moments take place underneath the lintel, Stone explained.The librarian is standing under the lintel when he has his chance to ask his sweetheart to marry him , and doesn't.It is there that he learns his trips chasing the clues of The Wandering Jew have cost him his job as a librarian.And it is there that he recounts that The Wandering Jew snubbed Jesus on his way to crucifixion , the act for which he was cursed."(Underneath the lintel) is a place of significance, and it's supposed to be a place of innocence, the librarian says, but things happen to him there," explained Stone.
