Joe Stewart, a former executive vice president of the Kellogg Co., attended college in the 1960s when blacks weren't allowed to attend the university closest to his family's Louisiana farm.Instead, he went to Southern University in Baton Rouge. He said the personal attention and care his instructors gave helped him succeed.
"At Southern, I saw African-American directors, coaches ... all the deans. That said to me I could be any of these things," Stewart said.
Even though his son, Erick, could have chosen other schools, he also attended his father's alma mater. He spent his summers interning at Denso Manufacturing and was offered a job upon graduation.Stewart said the job is a primary reason his son returned to Battle Creek.
