Joseph R. Stewart, J.D.
Joseph R. Stewart, a native Ohioan, graduated with an honors degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1970.He obtained his law degree from Yale Law School in 1973 and began his legal practice with a small firm in Columbus, Ohio, doing mostly civil litigation.He started his career in telecommunications law with GTE in 1983, representing the company in regulatory and other civil matters in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
He spent three years with GTE of the Northwest in Washington state in the mid-1980's before returning to Ohio as Associate General Counsel in 1987.While at GTE, Joe had primary responsibility for the last general rate case for a telecommunications company in Ohio.
He joined Sprint as Senior Attorney in 1998, where he has primary responsibility for state regulatory matters in Ohio and Indiana.Joe has tried and argued cases in courts of general jurisdiction, appellate courts and the Ohio Supreme Court.He represented Sprint in the first case seeking, and successfully obtaining, alternative regulation, under the new rules adopted by the commission in 2001.
Joe has served for many years on the Legal Ethics and Professional Conduct Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association, where he has prosecuted cases involving ethical violations.
He is the father of a 20 year old son and enjoys playing tennis and road biking in his spare time (which he wishes he had more of).
