    Bernd Stein, Ph.D.Senior Director of Oncology, Experimental TherapeuticsDr. Stein currently serves as Senior Director of Oncology, Experimental Therapeutics supporting Signal's oncology and inflammation programs.Dr. Stein joined Signal in September 1993 as one of the founding scientists.Since then he has advanced through positions of increasing responsibilities and was involved in various projects playing a pivotal role in establishing the strategic research goals and direction of this company.Efforts under his leadership have resulted in the identification of p38-2 and MEK6, two key MAPK signaling targets.In addition, Dr. Stein discovered a novel mechanism of gene regulation by estrogen.This work resulted in the formation of the Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) program, which under his direction generated several advanced lead compounds for the treatment of osteoporosis and cancer and CDC117, a novel SERM currently undergoing early clinical evaluation as treatment for cancer.Before joining Signal, he completed his post-doctoral training with Dr. Albert Baldwin, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill studying the molecular mechanism of gene regulation by various transcription factors.He has published over 50 scientific articles and is an inventor on 5 issued patents or pending patent applications.Dr. Stein received a Ph.D. in Natural Sciences from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.
