Dr. Steichen has been certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has also passed the examination for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand.He specializes in surgery of the hand and upper extremity with particular interest in microvascular surgical reconstruction and nerve compression disorders.

He is active in many medical organizations, including being president of the International Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, a vice president of the Pan Pacific Surgical Association, and president of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.He has served on the Executive Council of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and has been active in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Steichen is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Indiana University and an Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Kentucky.He is the Surgeon-In-Chief for St.Vincent Hospitals.Dr. Steichen has lectured at numerous national and international meetings and has given over 450 presentations.He has published 65 book chapters and scientific articles.He serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery, Microsurgery, and the European Medical Bibliography of Hand Surgery.He has been awarded honorary or corresponding memberships in eight international hand and microvascular surgical societies.

Dr. Steichen is involved in community affairs and is on the board of directors of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.He is a past president of the board of directors of the American Pianists Association and has served on the board of directors of the Indiana State Medical History Museum.PHYSICIAN BIBLIOGRAPHY (1994-1999)
