Running the pipeline along Fontana Boulevard also serves as an incentive said John Stegall, New Bern district manager for Charlotte-based Piedmont Natural Gas.
Once the transmission lines are in place, Stegall's district office will be serving Havelock area residential and commercial clients within reach of those lines, and he considers the air station a large potential customer.
...
The average pounds per square inch pressure on the transmission lines are 800 pounds, said Stegall.
Smore said the pipes which run predominantly along existing state highway rights-of-way will include safety precautions throughout the installation process.
Once the lines are buried, the only trace of construction work should be fresh grass and a few markers he said.
"You'll see special markers advising that the pipelines are in place," he said, adding that over the years property owners may change, or forget the location of the pipeline, "but they'll have plenty of reminders."
He says the "N.C. One-Call" regulation which requires calling1-800-632-4949 before digging near all utility lines is one important reminder, and if all else fails, anyone digging near the pipes will run across a warning tape advising there is a gas line below it.
If the line does get ruptured, the natural gas, which is lighter than air, has a tendency to disperse, he said. "And there's no mistaking the smell," he said. "The gas itself is odorless, but a distinctive smell has been added for detection purposes. Most people say it's close to the smell of rotten eggs."
The pipeline project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, and plans for the eventual distribution system, which uses smaller lines under less pressure, are in the works, said Stegall. -

"When it comes to economic development in our area, one of the things that's usually on the shopping list of businesses looking to locate in the area is natural gas, particularly if there is processing involved," said John D. Stegall, district manager of NCNG.
According to Stegall, homes and businesses will be surveyed to determine interest in gas service. He said economic feasibility and availability of money through NCNG's budget would determine when gas would be available to Havelock customers. -
