   Joe Stegall graduated with honors from Auburn University, became a decorated Air Force pilot with 200 combat missions in Vietnam, got an advanced degree in aeronautical engineering and helped coordinate astronaut training for some Gemini flights.
   
   When he left the military, he was elected tax assessor of Sumter County and later became mayor of York.
   
   Last September, the Rev. Stegall had the sad duty of helping to bury his big brother at Arlington National Cemetery -- a fitting place for an American hero.
   
   "One of the most admirable things that Joe did during the last years of his life was to take such good care of every need for my dear mother," Stegall wrote in "Remembering My Oldest Brother." As a young man, Stegall loved to listen to Birmingham radio host Joe Rumore, who had a way of endearing himself to people who couldn't get their day started without hearing him sell Martha White self-rising flour or Golden Eagle syrup.

   "There was never a word of profanity spoken from the lips of Joe Rumore over the airwaves," wrote Stegall in his chapter about the legendary radio announcer.
