"Our choice of Comprendium Leasing and the ReInvest model was made on the basis of its unmatched flexibility: instead of numerous individual contracts with various suppliers, we will be working with a single contract covering all components, which will be adjusted regularly," explains Dr. Manfred Stefener, founder and chairman of the board of SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG. At present, the existing equipment and the first new acquisitions are being transferred to CLM, Comprendium's asset-management system, which is used jointly.

"Our first potential OEM (original equipment manufacturer) customers are already holding their first units in their hands," said Manfred Stefener, CEO of Smart Fuel Cell.
    ...
But Stefener said portable fuel cells may swiftly become cost competitive.
    ...
"The content of our prototype cartridge holds 120 ml methanol and generates about 150 Wh -- enough to power a 15W notebook computer for 10 hours," Stefener explained.

The CEO of Smart Fuel Cell (SFC), Manfred Stefener, gave a presentation focusing on the company's PEM-DMFC product which is currently for sale, the SFC A25, which according to SFC's technical data sheet provides continuous output of 25 watts at 11.0-14.4 volts and peak power of 80 watts "through integrated 4 Ah battery buffer".
    ...
Stefener made much of how well suited the A25 is for the mobile home/recreational vehicle ("RV") market and his company's partnership with Hymer, a "market leader in recreational vehicles" in Europe.
    ...
Stefener talked about the next generation A25 (the "S25" - "Power Boy", 700 grams) being much smaller and more portable, and also talked about the prospect of selling 25,000 "mobile office" solutions involving an SFC fuel cell and a laptop built into a briefcase.

SFC also joined the conference in Lungtan, and its founder and supervisory board member Manfred Stefener complimented Antig's efforts to pull the DMFC component vendors together to develop the project. He advised Taiwan companies not to be in a rush to develop the DMFC market.Stefener pointed out in a panel discussion that the DMFC industry has a lot of interesting technologies, but it still lacks markets and applications. The industry's first priority should be to search for those markets and applications, he emphasized, and other panelists supported him saying that no DMFC supplier has yet actually demonstrated a clear way to reach the mass market.

Stefener mentioned that SFC started shipping its products in Germany and the company only served its home market for three years.Based on this experience, he advised Taiwan's DMFC community to explore the local Taiwan market initially too.

This time with Manfred Stefener, CEO of Smart Fuel Cell GmbH

H2 Report: What does Smart Fuel Cell do?

Stefener: Smart Fuel Cell develops miniaturized direct methanol fuel cell systems for a performance of less than 1kW.
    ...
Stefener: In the middle of this year we went commercial with our first product. We are talking about the world's first commercial DMFC product. It is applied in telematics, security, environmental measurement technology and the leisure market. These markets are currently served by batteries, solar systems or diesel generators. The Smart Fuel Cell provides several advantages in these fields, such as much longer operation time, reduced weight, shorter maintenance periods and significant cost-saving, compared with conventional technologies.

H2 Report: How does the methanol supply work?

Stefener: The infrastructure for our first product is already today ensured by Smart Fuel Cell.
    ...
Stefener: Methanol is a liquid which you cannot simply sell to the end-user.It is classified as easily flammable and toxic.
    ...
Stefener: In the industry sector SFC cooperates with the market leaders of the individual segments.
    ...
Stefener: Because of the existing cost structure, fuel cell technology will first find its way into the market for portable and grid-independent applications.
    ...
Stefener: The advantages in the portable and grid-independent sector are so obvious that FCs will be successful in any case.
    ...
Stefener: We cannot say this for Germany in general. Here in Bavaria we are very satisfied with the local funding policy - I can only speak highly of this. But if you look at the federal level or at what is happening in other states, you have to come to the conclusion that suitable funding programs often come too late.

H2 Report: What is your vision of the energy supply of the future?

Stefener: I believe that it is very important to move from our traditional energy system to more efficient scenarios.
