For taking a team loaded with juniors and molding them into NCS champions, San Ramon Valley coach Rick Steen has been named Coach of the Year by ANG Newspapers.
All season, Steen told his players they could win. And all season long, the Wolves proved him right.
"We started to win the one-run games and then we realized we could win, no matter what game, no matter what time," said Steen, whose team was 24-8.

Moments after the championship game, a water-drenched Steen quipped: "When we got that big lead, I started to worry I wouldn't know how to coach."
San Ramon Valley entered the season with little fanfare. After a woeful 2-4 start ("We were really struggling defensively," said Steen), the coach was able to get the players on the same page.
The Wolves regrouped and won their next four games before losing a 10-inning heartbreaker to rival Monte Vista. Seven consecutive wins followed, including four to open East Bay Athletic League play, but Steen still wasn't satisfied.

"Any time a coach wins, it is (because of) the people he surrounds himself with," said Steen.
