    NTD Acting Chairperson Mike Steele said the Shareholders' Agreement will ensure that the organisation's relationships with the Councils are managed professionally, that its mission is clearly stated and that all the required reporting processes are in place.

    The Agreement requires NTD to develop a three-year strategic plan and annual action plans and for these to be consistent with the Councils' desires for the future economic and community development of Northern Tasmania.

    It also provides for each Councils' commitment to the funding of NTD through a three-year schedule of financial contributions.

    Mr Steele said under the Shareholder Agreement NTD was charged with achieving a series of positive outcomes,

    Mr Steele said the Agreement would be discussed with Councils at presentations over the next two months with the intention that the Agreement commence on 1 July 2005.

    "By working together, we have an opportunity to play a major role in promoting and encouraging sustainable economic and community development in Northern Tasmania and this will provide the professional platform necessary to achieve the outcomes our community is seeking.

    "With the Gunns Ltd Pulp Mill and a number of other major projects in the offing, Northern Tasmania is on the crest of a major development era.

    "NTD stands ready to play its role in achieving this development and I am confident that the Shareholders' Agreement will be accepted by each Council, enabling the organisation to progress in an appropriate and strategic way," Mr Steele said.
