GRTA will add a third morning departure every weekday morning and possibly a fourth coach later this summer, according to Steve Stancil, GRTA's executive director.

"This is another step toward providing Cherokee County residents an easier commute," said Stancil."I know what Cherokees commuters go through every day trying to beat the I-575/75 corridor traffic.Now the express transit alternative is that much more attractive."

The Xpress route will be part of the Cherokee Area Transportation System (CATS) under the agreement with the County Commission.Cherokee residents will have a stronger say in the route's operation, Stancil said.

Cobb Community Transit (CCT) currently operates Route 575 but is turning it over to GRTA so the state agency can use its resources to expand service.

"CCT has done a great job beginning this service," Stancil said.

Gov. Sonny Perdue recently appointed Steven I. Stancil to GRTA’s board as its new executive director, and acting director Ritchey reverted to his previous title of Deputy Director.

Alexander has not yet met with Stancil, but his office “contacted me about a meeting, and it will occur soon.”

Stancil was a foe of commuter rail at one time. It isn’t clear if that has changed, but Alexander said, “I believe that a person of Mr. Stancil’s background understands the need to use all the tools at our disposal to alleviate the region’s air-quality and traffic congestion problems.”

The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority Board of Directors unanimously appointed Steven L. Stancil to serve as GRTA executive director at a meeting October 8.

Stancil served in the Georgia State House from 1988 to 2001, representing the communities of Woodstock, Canton, Holly Springs, Waleska, and Ball Ground. He was elected House Republican Leader by his colleagues in 1992, and has received the “Legislative Service Award” on three different occasions from the Georgia Municipal Association and the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia.
