Seth Spanos, MD, a 2003 Pisacano Scholar, graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine and is currently a 3rd-year resident in Indiana.He graduated summa cum laude from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a minor in Chemistry and Portuguese.As an undergraduate, Seth received numerous scholarships, as well as a research fellowship through a program that provides funding to undergraduate students to conduct their own research projects under the direction of a faculty mentor.At the end of his senior year, Seth was awarded a fellowship from the National Institute of Health (NIH) Pre-Doctoral Intramural Research Training program to conduct research at the NIH for one year.Seth was also involved in a number of volunteer activities during college.After completing a year of research at NIH, Seth began medical school where he continued his academic excellence and community service.His volunteer activities include serving at a homeless clinic and the Transitional Living Center, which helps paraplegic and quadriplegic people transition to independent living by teaching them life skills that were not required before their accidents.Seth has served as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year medical student representative and Vice-President of Utah's Family Medicine Interest Group, and will serve as co-president this year.He was a member of the Rural Medicine Interest Group, which he helped start so that medical students at Utah could learn more about rural medicine.In addition, he was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Utah Academy of Family Physicians.He co-organized Utah's Family Practice Residency's Fair the last two years, which promotes Family Medicine among the students at the medical school.As co-director of the Future Doctors Program, Seth was involved in scheduling physicians to make presentations, and training and recruiting other medical students to help with the activities.Seth was also involved in the Utah Rural Outreach Program (UROP), which addresses the health profession shortage in rural areas by increasing awareness and interest in professional careers and education in high school students in rural and frontier Utah.Last year, this program was awarded the Pfizer/AAMC Caring Community Grant, which will secure funding for the next four years.Seth was awarded a National Health Service Corps Scholarship because of his commitment and desire to practice primary care medicine in a rural/underserved community.This past year, he volunteered with a neighborhood clinic for the underserved and the Health and Discovery Center, conducting bi-annual skin screenings.He served on his residency's recruiting committee and as the Program Representative for the Indiana Academy of Family Physician's Resident Council.As a family physician, Seth plans to develop relationships with his patients, be involved in the community so he can better understand the people that he will have the opportunity to serve, and continue to learn and progress both personally and medically.
