Abby Spangler, founder of protesteasyguns.com, had a differing opinion on gun laws in response to April 16.

"It's an outrage that Senator Edwards, your legislator there, voted against closing the gun show loophole, which basically is like rubbing salt in the wounds of Virginians, who have been traumatized by this massacre that happened in our very own state," Spangler said.

In remembrance events across the country, groups of at least 32 people lay silently on the ground (following the example of Abby Spangler, founder of ProtestEasyGuns.com), rang bells, read names, or said prayers to remember the victims and to demonstrate their outrage at weak gun laws in America.

We also awarded Abigail Spangler the Brady Center Advocate Award for the grassroots movement of concerned citizens she has inspired - including students, parents, and people from all walks of life - who have been willing to demonstrate publicly their desire to strengthen America's woefully inadequate gun laws.Like many of us, she was moved to tears by the shocking events of April 16, 2007.Unlike many of us, she decided to do something about it.

She started ProtestEasyguns.com, and anyone can with participate or help organize one of their events.

Abby Spangler, founder of protesteasyguns.com, began advocating for these changes following the shootings.

So far, 17 states have at least partially closed the gun show loophole.Virginia is one of 33 states that has yet to make a change."Every gun sale at a gun show should have a background check," Spangler said."Ultimately, the protest movement hopes to change gun laws."

Spangler has put together numerous lie-ins throughout the country in which 32 participants lay down for three minutes, symbolizing the length of time it took for Cho Seung-Hui to purchase the guns used on April 16.

Omar Samaha, brother of victim Reema Samaha, joined the movement after sister, Randa, who attends the University of Virginia, participated in the UVa-32 lie-in and was contacted by Spangler via Facebook.

"We desperately hope that legislators respond to our calls across the state to improve gun laws, and we want the gun show loophole closed so that criminals and dangerous individuals don't have easy access to guns," Spangler said.

Spangler has recently begun to organize a national lie-in to occur on the anniversary of April 16.

The 32 protest ribbon makers honored the 32 students and faculty murdered on April 16, 2007, "and the 32 Americans murdered every day with guns," said Dr. Abby Spangler of Old Town, founder of ProtestEasyGuns.

The 2,000 ribbons will be made in anticipation for a National Lie-In -- a day of protests across the country scheduled for the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings.

On April 16, at least 43 lie-ins in 21 different states and D.C. will take place to demand stricter gun control laws.At each of the events, 32 people dressed in black wearing the protest ribbons will lie down on the ground for 3 minutes - the time it took the VA Tech shooter to buy his gun."Afterward, they will demand that their elected officials immediately pass strong gun laws, such as closing the gun show loophole, to reduce the tragic loss of 30,000 lives to gunfire every year in America," said Spangler.
