"It's quite a few stores for a center this size, but it's not a record for us," said Jim Spahn, the Galleria's marketing director.

The 10 new stores include Dry Ice, a home furniture store aimed at teens, which is scheduled to open this weekend; Delia's, a home furnishings and accessories store for teenage girls and young women, which should open this month; Big 10 Tires, an independent tire retailer, scheduled to open this fall; and Costco, a wholesale store, which is expected in the spring.

New stores that have already opened include bebe, a women's apparel store; The Children's Place, a children's clothing store; Street Corner News, which sells periodicals and snacks; Journeys, a footwear store, and two restaurants, Bistro & Grill and Sarku Japan.

The new shops total more than 112,000 square feet, according to mall officials.Officials say they're also optimistic about an announcement regarding the empty Macy's space.
    ...
Spahn said the announcement could take one of two forms. One would involve shuffling an existing store into the Macy's space and then filling the remaining vacancy. The other would involve attracting a new retailer to fill the Macy's building.

"At this stage nothing has been confirmed," Spahn said."There are several different scenarios being looked at. ... It's true anything can happen, but whatever does happen will certainly be in the best interest of the shopper and a benefit to the property as a whole."

Jim Spahn, marketing director for the Galleria, said the mall was able to recuperate to normal after the tornadoes, and the weekend even exceeded expectations.

"It was probably one of the best," Spahn said.

Spahn said he thought the Galleria would have a modest growth in sales this year - 1 or 2 percent.

But the warm weather has been a problem for some retailers, Spahn acknowledged.

"It's not a good catalyst for cold-weather clothing," Spahn said."Ideally it would be cool, misty, cloudy."

On Sunday, that's close to the weather Alabama got and Spahn was quite happy with turnout at the Galleria.

"We love it," he said Sunday afternoon.

The weather affects the overall psyche of the shopper, too, said Eastwood Mall's Benton, not just those buying cold-weather products.

Federated might see other opportunities in this market, said Jim Spahn, the Galleria's marketing director.

"I think you will see some department store shifts in the near future," he said."There are several looking at the property."

The Galleria remains "a very successful, very popular" shopping center, he said.

    ...
When the store first opened, it was supposed to be the first of at least two stores for the Birmingham market, Spahn said. But in 1992, R.H. Macy & Co. filed for bankruptcy and later was acquired by Federated.

"Through buyouts and bankruptcy, things changed," Spahn said. With only one store, advertising costs in the Birmingham market became expensive, he said.

Federated's Coggan would not say if the lack of more stores in the advertising market was a factor in the decision to close Macy's.She said, however, that Federated successfully operates single stores in several markets.

The decision to close the Galleria Macy's "is part of an ongoing evaluation of all of Federated's operations," she said."We look at all our operations and how they are doing in the current economic environment to decide where we need to be."
