If the bill was passed, "All officers in the US would have the same rights as criminals have during an investigation and police officers would no longer be treated as second class citizens," says David Spagnola, an officer with the Greensboro PD for over twenty years, and the Executive Director of NC Coalition of Police.
Spagnola went on to say: They would have the right to know their accusers, and know the evidence against them before they had to answer questions. They would have the right to refuse to take a polygraph exam without being threatened or losing their jobs. They would be given the right to have an attorney present during questioning, because these kinds of things can lead to civil lawsuits and things like that. Some states have recognized this injustice and passed their own legislation; some states refuse to pass it and that is why the International Union of Police Associations (the IUPA), and AFL-CIO are trying to get it on a national level.
