Sandie holds a degree in Zoology with Geology and obtained a PhD in bat biology at the University of Natal in South Africa.With over 20 years experience as an ecological consultant for English Nature, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the private sector, she is now Principal Ecologist with Baker Shepherd Gillespie.Having spent seven years in academic research in Megachiropteran ecology in South Africa, she is the author of four natural history books and scientific and popular articles and was co-author of the afro-tropical section of the IUCN action plan for fruit bats.Her experience in the commercial sector has involved environmental project management and the management of ecological teams within a large international engineering firm. Sandie is currently responsible for programming, ecological contract management, environmental assessments, mitigation design, writing technical documents with special emphasis on mammals, especially bats, otters and badgers and contract-related planning.She also has an interest in, and understanding of geological issues and is currently involved in developing and teaching specialist training courses for consultants. Sandie is a licensed trainer of bat workers and holds scientific licences issued by English Nature and the Countryside Council for Wales to handle and disturb bats.
