Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell said the case had remained active and officials had conducted various searches over the years. But with the four-year anniversary of the 19-year-old's disappearance approaching, Sowell said, he had a hunch that officials needed to look again.

About a dozen employees of the Sheriff's Department, Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and other law enforcement agencies performed grid searches Thursday across about 40 acres of wooded land off County Road 178 near Singleton, where Rodriquez lived, Sowell said.

It was there that searchers found a tennis shoe matching the kind Rodriquez was wearing when he went missing, Sowell said.Soon after, they came across a human skull, several other bones, clothing and a .22 rifle.

Though officials can't say for sure that the remains are those of the missing Anderson High School graduate, the chances are good, Sowell said.

The bones will be sent to North Texas State University for DNA analysis, Grimes County District Attorney Tuck McLain said.

"Hopefully, they'll be able to give us a possible cause of death, too," he said.

Sowell said finding the remains four years later was a "stroke of luck" and described the search as looking for a needle in a haystack.

"This is a very thick area -- I'm talking thick, thick, thick," Sowell said of the land adjacent to Rodriguez's home."If you don't know where you're going, you can get lost."

Sowell said officials were prepared to begin at "ground zero" with a homicide investigation.

McLain said that it was too early to determine whether foul play was involved and that officials might never know how Rodriquez died.

"We'll have to wait and see what they come up with," he said.

Sheriff Don Sowell said county residents calling 911 were automatically routed to Navasota police, who then passed the information to his office by calling his cell phone.

"I can't get any answer from anybody," the frustrated sheriff said, explaining that he heard power could be down for weeks."It's not acceptable. It's pitiful."

Sowell expressed ire that some residents -- Mid-South Synergy customers -- living just a couple miles away from the jail already had power restored. In fact, he said, most Mid-South customers didn't even lose power during the storm.

A small generator was powering basic operations at the jail and Sowell said he now was searching for a larger generator that could power his facility long-term.The portable toilets were brought in to prevent a sewage back up at the jail, he said.

"The bottom line is I have a public service, public safety office to run," Sowell said.

"It was as if he just vanished," Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell said.
    ...
"That was always strange, why all these years no phone calls, birthday calls--nothing," Sowell said.

So on the anniversary month of his disappearance, investigators want to give one more look at an area of interest, the woods that begin just a few feet from Rodriguez's home.

The woods span hundreds of acres, that include thick brush, barbed wire, and several ravines.

"The whole area is wooded so you're looking at finding a needle in the haystack, trying to know where to look and what to look for," Sowell said.
    ...
"I had to tell them that we found what appears to be human remains," Sowell said "But I said it's not a match until it's a match."
    ...
I think because it election time for county sheriff is why the news was there during the search, if the media is in Grimes county bet your bottom dollor Don Sowell will be there.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 4, 2008 at 03:38 AMYes, the body may have been buried at the time of death, and when investigators had searched the area, but remember "Trained" investigators would have noticed a patch of dirt that had been disturbed, but this is Grimes county sheriff dept. we are talking about, not a real department.Don don't hire any trained officers just rookies that can't outshine him, I know this first hand.

Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell said the area where Butaud was hit is a dark location.

"You're in a rural area there, the only lights are going to be at stores," he said."It's really a dangerous situation for pedestrians to walk on a highway whether it's daytime or nighttime.Any effort to avoid walking on the highway is recommended."

While Sowell said most people drive with high beams on at that time of night, even with light-colored clothes someone driving that fast would come up on objects quickly.

"You always have to be constantly observant of your surroundings," he said.

Sowell said officials still are speculating as to why Butaud stepped in front of the vehicle, but he does not believe it was to intentionally hurt himself.

"It's sad when something like this happens," he said.
