Sowell joined the Juniata faculty in 1989 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1992.His research focuses on the social history of Latin America , and he has written two books : The Early Colombian Labor Movement : Artisans and Politics in Bogata 1832-1919 and Healers , Ideologies and Power in the 19th Century Andes : Miquel Perdomo Neira and the Emergence of Medical Pluralism in Latin America..

He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Grand Valley State College in 1976.He earned a master's degree in history in 1980 and a doctorate in history in 1986 , both from the University of Florida.He received the Juniata Junior Faculty Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1994.He is a member of the American Historical Association and the Latin American Studies Association.
