Solomon Southwick

These tables include (1) the one John Goddard made for James Atkinson in 1773, (2) one that reputedly belonged to Solomon Southwick (1731-1797), publisher of the Newport Mercury (fig. 12), and (3) one with an ogee-shaped spiral pillar (fig. 13).

According to Reed, the city's copy of the Declaration of Independence is one of 28 printed by Solomon Southwick, editor of the Newport Mercury.

Signed by then Secretary of State Henry Ward, the 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence by Solomon Southwick of Newport was ordered by the General Assembly.

Solomon Southwick, who has signed this document, was editor of the Newport, R.I. Mercury and an active Newport printer (and the second printer in Providence).
