    Edward Southall

Edward Southall was born in Hereford, England on Christmas Eve 1986, and has since lived in London and Liverpool. His present home is on the island of Jersey, CI. At the age of five he began learning the piano and 'cello and, two years later, the trumpet. After excelling in the piano, at 15 year of age, Edward started to learn the organ. He now plays frequently at Grouville Parish Church and is the accompanist of Victoria College Boys' Choir under Robin Stubbs. Although Edward has a passion for performing, his forte lies in composition; for two years Edward has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra Composition Course where he has had taken the most from invaluble experiences. Last year saw the premiere of The Meaning of Life portrayed by Oranges: Taking the Pith!. Other composition performances of his include The Deer, performed by Tommy Hewitt Jones on cello and the composer on piano at Silk Hall, Radley College; The Half-Life of Einsteinium, performed by NYO Sinfonietta, and Monsieur Moustique, which has been considered by many to be Edward's best work yet; in 2003 he was a runner-up in the BBC Proms / Guardian Young Composer Competition after submitting this work and it has also been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. In early 2004 the composer was invited to write a work for The Endymion Ensemble. Athens is Burning! was quickly composed and performed for the first time in The Purcell Room, South Bank in February 2004. This piece was subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 2's "The Green Room". He has also had many works performed around Jersey, both privately and publically. In 2001, Edward claimed 3rd Prize in the 13-18 year old age category in the EPTA UK Composer's Competition. His composition 'Life' was performed by James Southall, the former Queens' College Cambridge Organ Scholar, at St Hilda's Collge Oxford on 1st August 2001. It is believed that his main compositional influences are Shostakovich, Bach and Feeney. Over recent years Edward has had composition lessons with Paul Patterson, Diana Burrell, Gary Carpenter and Jan Smaczny, and hopes to eventually become a professional composer for television or film. Edward holds the Associateship diploma of The North And Midlands School Of Music for composition.

More information about some of Edward's works is available by clicking here.

Blue Knight Studios invited Edward Southall in 2002 to become their Composer in Residence and, in that summer, he accepted. Plans are well underway to create CDs of his works.

Edward is one of four brothers, two of whom have studied Music at Cambridge University. Edward also enjoys kicking a football around the garden with them, playing table-tennis and, of course, drinking beer. For more information on beers, please click here.
