Jose Israel Sousa's struggle with high school math 15 years launched a community initiative that has provided nearly $100,000 in scholarships to 83 college bound teenagers.
Sousa, a former Lynn Vocational Technical Institute student, could not leave Puerto Rico to attend last night's Lynn Hispanic Scholarship Fund banquet, but he sent Fund organizers a letter recalling their first act of generosity.

Working with other members in Lynn's Spanish-speaking community, Tizol raised additional money to help Sousa, who was confined to a wheelchair by a paralysis-related ailment, pay for transportation to the remedial classes.

Sousa earned a bachelor's degree, married and is working on a master's degree in Puerto Rico.
