John Soules Foods opts for Marel system
When major US beef and poultry processor John Soules Foods was searching for a means of upgrading its plant at Tyler, Texas, earlier this year, the choice fell on Marel, as one of the world's leading developers and manufacturers of intelligent processing equipment for the food industry.
Following extensive consultations, the range of equipment installed included a dual-lane Marel Intelligent Portioning Machine, an 8-station Marel grader, a Marel Intelligent Slicing Machine for the horizontal portioning of breast meat, and a Marel Splitter.
"Before reaching a decision, we looked at equipment from two other major manufacturers," reveals John Soules, VP (Operations) at the company, which processes some 70 million pounds of beef and poultry each year.

"Accuracy and consistency are also of great importance to us," continues Soules."Often, we have to operate to very tight specifications. As an example, one of our customers demands a range of +/-7 grammes, and even if the IPM misses a piece which doesn't fit this profile, we'll still catch it.
"At the same time, Marel equipment is relatively easy to operate, so we didn't have to spend much time on training staff how to use it.We sent a couple of our maintenance people on a course to Marel USA in Kansas City, but once the grading parameters have been set, you could say the system almost runs itself," concludes John Soules, VP (Operations) of US processor, John Soules Foods.
