Every time Sabrina Sood relaxed and thought the worst was over, Hurricane Ivan unleashed another unpleasant surprise.
Sood, 23, is a first-year medical student at St. George's University in Grenada. The 1999 Modesto High graduate started her studies on the island just after graduating from UCLA in December. Her parents, Drs. Surendra and Shahshi Sood, now live in Riverbank.
Sood made it back home Sunday.
Ivan killed 39 people on Grenada and left most of the island population of 89,000 homeless.
"We're not supposed to get hurricanes," Sabrina Sood said.
...
Sood lived in an apartment building on campus.
...
Then, Sood said, a window blew out and shards pierced the young man's leg."We're medical students and we had a first aid kit, so we spent most of the rest of the storm picking shards out."
Sood said waves broke over a 20-foot cars smashed.
...
Sood said communications broke down."Both of my cell phones were down. You couldn't call home.I had to pay people on the street to borrow their phone."
Some of her fellow students tried to go into town to help, but people were shooting at each other.Sood finally got off the island Saturday and back home Sunday night.

Even though her last hours were harrowing, Sood insisted that she will return to Grenada and her dream of becoming a dermatologist.
