Letters to the editor: Little guy no match for Big Oil - [Cached Version]

So it is gratifying to see professor of philosophy Douglas Soccio make an unapologetic appeal to the Judeo-Christian principles of love of God and of neighbor as restated by Jesus Christ. These principles are absolute for our voluntary personal conduct, but their application to government must be limited by other constitutional and religious principles because government "charity" uses the coercion of taxation and may have unintended negative consequences.

Therefore, the state of Virginia is correct in refusing to honor homosexual or unmarried heterosexual relationships as if they were marriages because public policy honors and privileges marriage for its benefits to society.Stable marriages provide the continuing male-female role models and interactions needed by children to become responsible citizens.Indeed, only last year the voters of California defended marriage at the ballot box by passing Proposition 22 decisively.

Only way to deal with vandal idiotes is to take tough... - [Cached Version]

Maybe this is the perfect occasion to try out my new favorite word , compliments of Dr. Douglas Soccio , Record Searchlight philosophy columnist.Soccio recently enlightened readers about the word idiotes - individuals he described in part as self-absorbed nonparticipants..( It's pronounced id-ee-oh-tees. ).

To those who contend name-calling is impolite , I say I'm simply identifying a particular portion of our human population by its rightful name. You know , sort of like calling a spade a spade - only more specific - much as one might look at birds as a general category , then get down to brass tacks and call one a vulture , for example.

Forget vultures , I'm here to discuss vandals - a breed far worse than vultures since at least vultures clean up after themselves.More than garden-variety selfish , vandal idiotes are destructive - for the fun of it.
