photo of Addie SoaresAddie has worked for Zoolatry in the Palisades and Westmoreland Circle areas of the District for 2 years.Originally from Brazil, Addie first came to the United States in the late 1960s to study cell biology at the University of Wisconsin.She received a Masters Degree from the University in 1972 and returned to Brazil, where she became an assistant professor of biology at the University of Brasilia.Addie also became the president of an organization devoted to the conservation and preservation of the rain forest.

Experience with AnimalsGrowing up in Brazil, Addie trained horses and participated in dressage competitions.When she settled permanently in the United States in 1988, Addie's focus shifted to the care of companion animals, and she became a fulltime adoption counselor with the Montgomery County Humane Society, conducting home visits and placing animals throughout the area.She frequently works late into the night and weekends, driving great distances to reach an adoptive home.She is a standout in a field in which few last more than a year, much less more than a decade.When asked why she does not take time off, she says "I cannot.If I do, animals will die."

Addie has served as an animal behavior consultant and was retained last year as an expert witness in animal behavior in a local legal proceeding.
