Rev. Dave Smits

Part-time ministers Tim Custer, pastoral care, and David Smits, calling pastor, join Jonathan Elgersma, senior pastor; Rob Holland, director of youth ministry; John Cleveringa, associate youth pastor; Chris Lowe, part-time director of worship for youth ministry; and thirty-one volunteers who minister to over 180 young people.

In 1967, Rev. David Smits was called to become pastor of music and education, creating an effective ministry to all age groups.On October 18, 1968, he married Jan Mastenbrook of Kalamazoo.

Rev. Hains and Rev. Smits proved to be a good team.

In 1975, Rev. Smits accepted a call to the Knapp Street Reformed Church in Grand Rapids.His family was honored at a farewell ceremony at the annual church picnic.

Dave Smits was first introduced to Faith Church on the Camp Geneva "lookout" over Lake Michigan.It was the summer before his senior year at Western Theological Seminary when two charter church members inquired whether he would be willing to direct the Senior Choir and teach one or two catechism classes.Three years later Dave came back to Faith as Minister of Music and Education, a position he served for eight years.In 1975 he left to become a pastor of the Knapp Street Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.In 1983 he accepted the invitation to become Senior Pastor of the Calvary Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan, a position he held until returning to Faith Church in 1992 as Senior Pastor.He recently retired from full time ministry and now serves Faith as Pastor of Calling.

Dave and his wife, Jan, have been married for thirty-nine years.

Hailing from the state that offers great attractions such as tall corn, great sunsets, and the birthplace of David Smits, John has quickly blended in with the youth group, congregation, and staff of Faith.
