According to Deputy Chief Dan Smits, firefighters responded to a fire at 6:54 p.m. Tuesday at the former Calumet City Gun and Coin Shop, 425 State St. Firefighters discovered the building, now owned by the city, had been broken into and several small fires set inside.Smits said the fire never endangered neighboring properties and was quickly extinguished.
Firefighters were called to another fire at 1:29 a.m. Wednesday at 774-776 State Line Road, which houses Great Food Mart and a beauty shop. The fire was quickly extinguished, Smits said, but caused serious smoke damage to the building.
Four minutes after receiving the call for the State Line Road fire, firefighters were called to another blaze at a vacant home at 460 Freeland Ave.The Freeland Avenue fire caused substantial damage to the home, which will likely have to be demolished due to the damage, Smits said.
The blaze caused a natural gas line and electrical wires to melt, Smits said, complicating efforts to extinguish the fire.Firefighters from Dolton and Lansing assisted in fighting the fire.
No one was injured in connection with any of the incidents.
All of the fires have been deemed suspicious, Smits said, adding that arson investigators inquiries are ongoing to determine if the three blazes are connected.
