According to Deputy Chief Dan Smits, firefighters responded to a fire at 6:54 p.m. Tuesday at the former Calumet City Gun and Coin Shop, 425 State St. Firefighters discovered the building, now owned by the city, had been broken into and several small fires set inside.Smits said the fire never endangered neighboring properties and was quickly extinguished.

Firefighters were called to another fire at 1:29 a.m. Wednesday at 774-776 State Line Road, which houses Great Food Mart and a beauty shop. The fire was quickly extinguished, Smits said, but caused serious smoke damage to the building.

Four minutes after receiving the call for the State Line Road fire, firefighters were called to another blaze at a vacant home at 460 Freeland Ave.The Freeland Avenue fire caused substantial damage to the home, which will likely have to be demolished due to the damage, Smits said.

The blaze caused a natural gas line and electrical wires to melt, Smits said, complicating efforts to extinguish the fire.Firefighters from Dolton and Lansing assisted in fighting the fire.

No one was injured in connection with any of the incidents.

All of the fires have been deemed suspicious, Smits said, adding that arson investigators inquiries are ongoing to determine if the three blazes are connected.

The grant requires a 10 percent matching grant from the city, a fund for which has already been established, said Deputy Fire Chief Dan Smits.

The grant to Calumet City represents the largest Illinois grant in the firefighting vehicle category provided by the program and is the 12th highest in the country.

The hazardous materials operations the new vehicle will assist with can also be used in dealing with biohazards, something Smits said is important particularly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and, "since we are on the border of Chicago and are one of the departments that are expected to respond if a biohazard incident were to occur in the city of Chicago."

The vehicle will also allow for physical rehabilitation for firefighters when enduring extreme heat or cold or extended operations that can lead to dehydration or exhaustion.

    ...
The department anticipates receipt of the vehicle as early as the end of this year, Smits said.

The grant, one of 281 presented across the country, is part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The program is designed to bring the U.S. Congress and FEMA together to enhance basic fire service nationwide.

Smits said the department thanks U.S. Rep.
